Column addition and subtraction worksheets, with or without carrying.
Choose the type of problem, the number of digits, and whether regrouping (carrying/borrowing) should be present or absent. Every operation is verified: answers are accurate and the number of carried digits matches your settings. Problems are pre-aligned in grid columns, ready for pencil practice.

How to use it
- Choose addition, subtraction, or a mix of both, then select the number of digits.
- Adjust regrouping: without carrying for beginners, with carrying to introduce the concept, or either.
- Set the number of problems and keep the seed, or change it for new problems.
- Print the worksheet, print the answer key separately, or export as SVG or CSV.
A worked example
Example: addition, 2 digits, with regrouping. The equation 58 + 67 involves regrouping because adding the ones column gives 8 + 7 = 15 (one regrouping), then 5 + 6 + 1 = 12 (a second one): 2 regroupings, result 125.
In subtraction "without regrouping," 87 − 35 is allowed (7 − 5 and 8 − 3), whereas 52 − 38 is rejected: it requires borrowing from the tens column.
Method, underlying assumptions, and limits
Method. Numbers are drawn using the seed, and then each problem is checked column by column: an addition problem counts a carry when a column reaches 10 or more, and a subtraction problem counts a borrow when the top digit is too small. Only operations matching your settings are kept, with no duplicates and a positive result.
Limits. The numbers have the same count of digits, and subtractions always yield a positive result. If very few equations meet strict criteria (for instance, a large number of 2-digit problems without regrouping), the sheet will be shorter, and the tool will let you know.
Frequently asked questions
When should regrouping be introduced?
Once your child masters basic operations without regrouping and understands complements to 10. Start with just a few regrouping problems mixed in with non-regrouping ones.
Is the answer key checked?
Yes: the result of each operation is recalculated, and the number of carries/borrows is compared against your settings before display.
Can we create larger subtraction problems?
Yes, up to 4 digits. Numbers are ordered so that the top number is always larger than the bottom one.
Are my settings transmitted anywhere?
No, everything is calculated locally and nothing is saved.
