From your list to a ready-to-use worksheet

  1. Choose a suggested theme or write your own words. Separate each answer from its clue with a colon.
  2. Choose the level of help: no letters, starting letters, a word bank, or both. Click "Create my puzzles" after making changes.
  3. Review each group and its answer key. Adjust any ambiguous clue before handing out the worksheet.
  4. Download the PDF. Keep the editable project file as well if you want to reuse your list another day.

Start with a few words already learned. A puzzle of six to eight familiar words introduces the concept without requiring a long session. This number is a practical choice, not an official grade-level standard. An adult can read the clues aloud; you can pause at any time.

The "Help" mode provides only the letters in the starting squares of each word. The word bank adds the list of answers for that group in alphabetical order. The answer key fills in every square. These outputs are separate so you can choose what to show.

A calculated example: CHAT and LAPIN

Type "CHAT : Il ronronne" then "LAPIN : Il a de longues oreilles". Both answers share the letter A. A grid crossing them on this letter contains 8 filled squares: 4 + 5 − 1. The placement depends on the variation; the words, clues, and this total remain the same. The CSV file lets you double-check their starting row and column, starting from 1.

Numbering follows row order, from left to right. If two words start in the same square, they share the same number and appear in two different clue lists. Words go horizontally or vertically only; no diagonals or reversed text.

Why several small puzzles sometimes appear

Two words with no shared letters cannot cross directly. A third answer can act as a bridge. Size limits and previously placed words might also prevent the algorithm from combining the entire list into a single puzzle.

The generator then keeps the remaining words in a separate group instead of deleting them. Each group gets its own clues and answer key. A group with just one word is indicated by its lack of intersections: it is a standalone word to complete, not an interconnected puzzle. Try a different layout or add a relevant word that shares letters.

The engine tests several orders and layouts, but it does not explore every mathematically possible grid. Having multiple groups does not prove that a single puzzle is impossible. The goal is to quickly generate complete worksheets with an accurate explanation of what was produced.

Method and sources

Engine version: October 17, 2026. Long words are placed first, then each new answer must intersect a matching letter. The squares immediately before and after each word remain open. Adjacent perpendicular squares are checked to prevent unintended letter sequences. Twelve bounded attempts per group prioritize word count, followed by intersections and compactness. The layout variation sets a reproducible seed.

Puzzles do not exceed 30 rows or columns. Every provided word must appear once per layout version. Letters are re-checked at their coordinates, and intersections and group connections are verified in the generator algorithm. The number of words, rows, and intersections is calculated programmatically.

Normalization removes accents, spaces, apostrophes, and hyphens. Œ becomes OE and Æ becomes AE. Thus, "cœur" takes up five squares, as CŒUR becomes COEUR. Two words that become identical will be rejected with an error message. Your original spelling remains saved in your project and in the answer key preview.

Printing, saving, and limitations

The PDF is generated directly on your device in A4 or Letter format, portrait or landscape orientation. Clues that are too long will overflow onto a second page. The selected square size is a target maximum: a large puzzle may scale down square sizes to fit the page. Print a test copy before preparing multiple sets.

The JSON project file stores only your word list and settings; it does not connect to any account. Nothing is saved automatically. Closing the page without downloading your project will cause you to lose your changes. Files do not contain ad links and can be freely used in your activities. SVG and PNG formats export the selected puzzle grid only, without clues; the PDF provides the complete worksheet.

The tool accepts 2 to 60 distinct answers of 2 to 25 Latin letters, and clues from 2 to 200 characters long. It does not check clue spelling or generate definitions for your words. The three featured themes are editable examples. No specific age suitability, score, or reading progress is guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create a crossword puzzle with my own words and clues?

Yes. Enter 2 to 60 distinct words (2 to 25 letters each), followed by a colon and a clue. The three built-in themes are fully editable. Accents, spaces, and hyphens are automatically removed inside grid squares; ligatures like œ and æ become OE and AE.

Why does my list generate multiple puzzles?

Your list may contain words that share no letters or are difficult to connect within the engine's rules. Remaining words are grouped into additional puzzles. No words are ever discarded. Try a different layout variation or add a connecting word.

What help options can I print?

You can display starting letters for each word and a word bank. The PDF offers student puzzle sheets, hint sheets, answer keys, or the puzzle followed by its answer key. Settings do not correspond to standardized grade levels.

Are the PDF exports and answer keys free?

Yes, all exports from this tool are free and require no account: PDF, print, SVG or PNG grids, CSV coordinates, and JSON project files. Hepaly paid products and subscriptions have their own pricing and terms.

How do I save a puzzle project and reopen it later?

Download the JSON project file, then click "Reopen a JSON project" on your next visit. Your word list, settings, and chosen layout variation will be restored. Using the same engine version reproduces the exact same layout. No auto-saving is performed.

Are my words sent to a server?

No. All processing, exports, and project loading happen locally within your web browser. Form fields do not transmit data or append anything to the page URL. No real child names are needed.
