An example at 3:30

The big hand points to 6: 30 minutes. The small hand sits halfway between 3 and 4.

A worksheet that follows what your child already knows

  1. Start with a few familiar times, or type the ones you want to practice.
  2. Choose read, draw, or both. Gradually remove visual cues that are no longer needed.
  3. Check the answer key before handing out the page. To try it out here, enter the time and then check.
  4. Print the activity and keep the answer key separate. The project file lets you reload the same set later.

A short worksheet leaves room to talk together: Which hand are we looking at? Which numbers is the short hand between? You can keep a single clock per page, prepare a large clock to manipulate, or stop the activity after a few questions. Settings are not certified grade-level standards.

Why does the short hand move between two numbers?

At 3:30, the long hand goes halfway around: 30 × 6 = 180°. The short hand has already moved past the 3: 3 × 30 + 30 ÷ 2 = 105°, halfway to the 4. So the two hands do not jump from one number to the next at the exact same time.

At 3:50, the short hand is close to the 4, but the hour is not 4 o'clock yet. Have your child locate the 50 minutes first, then the current hour. The written answer key may say "ten to four" on a 12-hour clock. The digital reading remains 3:50.

3:0090°0°
3:30105°180°
3:50115°300°
12:000°0°

Angles start from the 12 and move clockwise. A full circle is 360°. The short hand moves 30° per hour and 0.5° per minute; the long hand moves 6° per minute.

AM or PM: Making 24-hour time easy to read

A clock face alone does not distinguish 7:30 AM from 7:30 PM (19:30). In 24-hour mode, each exercise therefore adds "AM" or "PM". The answer key and digital interactive test follow this clue. In 12-hour mode, both ways of writing correspond to the same clock face; the test accepts this equivalence.

Inner markings show 13 to 23 and "0/12" at the top. Midnight is written 0:00 in your lists; 24:00 is rejected to prevent mixing up days. The tool does not calculate dates, durations, or time zones.

Method, sources, and limitations

Engine version: October 23, 2026. A variant seed initializes a reproducible shuffle of possible times at the selected step interval. The same list and settings yield the same clocks with this version. The first version of a custom list keeps your initial order; subsequent versions shuffle the list.

When you request more questions than the interval offers in distinct times, times will repeat. For example, over 12 hours with a 1-hour step, there are only 12 unique positions. A notification message will indicate this. The tool accepts up to 48 times and 30 versions, capped at 100 printable worksheets per generation.

Worksheets "with hints" include number labels and minute markings. Answer keys are kept separate from exercises. Blank clock faces and the cut-out clock do not have a set answer key. Cutting out and placing the paper fastener should be done with an adult; small parts must be kept away from young children.

Official reference consulted on October 23, 2026: Éduscol, Cycle 2 curricula (US grades 1–3, ages 6–9) applicable in 2026–2027, referencing the math program published in the Official Bulletin of October 31, 2024. The options in this workshop are practical design choices; this citation does not guarantee educational endorsement of the generator.

The PDF is generated locally on your device in A4 (210 × 297 mm) or US Letter (215.9 × 279.4 mm). Select "Actual size" or 100% scale to preserve round clock faces. A dense layout reduces clock size: opt for six clocks or fewer if your child needs space.

Times, title, practice inputs, and project settings stay on your device. Nothing is saved automatically. The PDF contains all selected pages; SVG and PNG exports contain the first page. The CSV file provides answers and hand angles for adult checking. No promotional links are added to generated files.

Frequently asked questions

Are the worksheets and answer keys free?

Yes. Worksheets, visual hints, answer keys, and file exports from this tool are available without an account, email address, or payment. Hepaly products and subscriptions remain separate offerings.

Can I type my own custom times?

Yes, from 1 to 48 times, one per line, such as 7:30 or 07:30. Hours range from 0 to 23 and minutes from 0 to 59. The first version preserves the order of your list.

How can I print only the exercise worksheets?

Select "Worksheets only" under PDF content. You can also prepare hints or answer keys on their own. "Worksheets then separate answer keys" combines both without displaying solutions on student pages.

Why use the AM or PM indicator?

The clock face repeats twice a day. In 24-hour mode, the indicator distinguishes, for example, 3:30 from 15:30 (3:30 PM), avoiding ambiguous questions.

How do I reuse the same set later?

Download the JSON project file and reopen it here. It preserves your times, seed variant, settings, and digital test entries. Sharing setting links excludes custom inputs and does not replace the complete project file.

What is targeted practice for?

After taking the interactive test, check your answers and select targeted practice. The new sheet will only keep clocks that received an incorrect or invalid response. Unattempted clocks are not treated as mistakes.
